In organizations, information doesn't stop moving simply because formal communication ends.

One pattern we've noticed in organizations is that when people feel they only have part of the picture, they often turn to one another to fill in the gaps.

These conversations are often described as the workplace "๐’˜๐’‰๐’Š๐’”๐’‘๐’†๐’“ ๐’๐’†๐’•๐’˜๐’๐’“๐’Œ."

What's interesting is that they are not always driven by gossip.

Many times, they emerge because people are trying to reduce uncertainty and make sense of what is happening around them.

From a learning perspective, that raises an interesting question.

When people are relying more on informal networks than formal communication channels, what are they trying to learn that they feel they still don't know?

The conversations themselves may not be the signal. The underlying search for clarity might be.

What conditions cause people to rely more heavily on informal conversations to understand what's happening inside an organization?
