Why your energy dips - and how to work with it, not against it.
You probably know the feeling:
✔ You're clear in the morning, then cloudy by lunch.
✔ You’re in flow after a great meeting, then completely flat in the next.
✔ You open your laptop after 3 p.m. and… nothing happens.
You’re not alone.
Energy doesn’t deplete in a straight line - it drops in patterns. And once you start noticing those patterns, you can work with them, instead of against them.
🕒 The 4 Hidden Drop Points
In our work, we’ve consistently seen four predictable moments where energy tends to dip - across roles, levels, and even industries.
1. Post-Meeting Fog
You were “on” for the last 45 minutes. Then your brain checks out - and you're not sure why.
🟡 What’s happening: High output during meetings creates an invisible withdrawal. Processing, context-shifting, and performance cost energy.
2. Midday Mental Crash
Lunch is over, inbox is full, and everything feels heavier than it should.
🟡 What’s happening: Decision fatigue. Mental inputs have outpaced recovery. Your cognitive load is maxed.
3. Late-Afternoon Drift
You’re staring at your screen, toggling between windows, doing just enough to “look busy.”
🟡 What’s happening: Natural circadian rhythm dip + diminishing returns from earlier energy crutches (caffeine, adrenaline).
4. End-of-Day Avoidance
It’s 4:58, and you suddenly remember 10 things you “meant to do.” 🟡 What’s happening: Subconscious tension around transition - shifting out of work mode while still seeking closure.
🧭 So What Can You Do?
WDA doesn’t tell you to push harder - it invites you to pay attention sooner.
Start by asking:
When do I feel myself fade - and what’s been happening right before?
Am I honoring or overriding that shift?
What would it look like to adjust - not everything - but just 10 minutes around that moment?
This isn’t about fixing your schedule. It’s about noticing your rhythm - and designing around it.
Try This:
Pick one day this week. Track your energy every 2 hours - nothing fancy. Just a quick check-in:
“Am I clear, cloudy, flat, or scattered?”
You may be surprised how consistent your drop points are. And once you see them - you can start working with them.
